There's a particular kind of reverence reserved for the Huia. It's a bird most New Zealanders, or visitors to New Zealand,  will never see, not because it's rare, but because it is extinct. The last confirmed sighting was in 1907, and yet the Huia remains one of the most storied birds in Aotearoa's history, its memory carried forward in carving, in whakapapa, and now in the jewellery we make.

The Huia was striking even among New Zealand's remarkable native birds. Its long, curved white tipped tail feathers set it apart, so much so that those feathers became one of the most treasured taonga in te ao Māori, worn by rangatira as a mark of chieftainship and status. To wear a Huia feather was to carry mana, and the bird itself was protected and respected accordingly.

What makes the Huia especially poignant is the shape of its beak, different between male and female, the male's short and strong for prising bark, the female's long and curved for probing deep into rotting wood. The pair worked together to find food that neither could reach alone, a small but telling detail of how finely tuned this bird was to its forest home before that home, and the bird within it, was lost.
